100% BASS   Press Release

11/4/2006 – Crutcher Makes Huge comeback to Take Pro / Am Championship

As another year comes to its final conclusion, one this was certain, always be prepared for the unexpected. The week started out with unsettled weather that quickly turned to foggy calm for the two day event. The buzz around Russo’s Marina on the California Delta, was “would the top water bite hold up or would the flippers take over”, As it turned out, a little of both was need to adapt and win.

On day one, Mark Crutcher of Lakeport, Ca. was in 14th place with 12.88 pounds, and most people had already written him off as a serious contender. This did stop Mark, as he prepared for day 2, I heard him say, I had some good bites yesterday on a Zara Spook and if they will eat it today, I still have a chance to win. This is why we practice, the Spook bite held up for 4 days for him and allowed the big bites necessary to come from behind in this closely contested tournament. On Sunday mark used Spooks, shallow running crankbaits, and he flipped a drop shot rig along the weed lines to amass the largest 5 fish limit of the weekend, 19.56 pounds.  This brought him to his two day winning total of 32.44 pounds and an incredible come from behind win. At the awards ceremony, Mark took the time to thank Powell Rods and River2Sea for their support and commented how his new Rods made a big difference when fishing 4 days in a row.
Marks big fish on day 2, a real nice 6.63 Lb bass, got him in the top 5 of the big fish pot and he received $100, but the real reward came when Steve West of Mossdale Boats presented Mark with the keys to his new BassCat Pantera Classic completely rigged with Mercury outboard, MinnKota Trolling Motor, and Humminbird electronics’. Congratulations to Mark for accomplishing was few have done, on the heals of his 2005 Angler of the Year Title, he is now the 2006 Pro/Am Champion.

Second place was almost as impressive as first with two anglers tied only 1.32 pounds behind the winner. Phil Gangwer of Clear Lake Oaks and Scott Head of Knightsen accomplish the same goal of 31.02 pounds in two completely different ways. Phil spent the entire tournament flipping Reaction Innovation Tubes and Sweet Beavers in the central Delta, while Scott used Lucky Craft Pointer 128’s and chrome Rattle Traps on what was a pretty good reaction bite in Franks Tract and Rock Slough. Both guys took the time to thank their sponsors for supporting them and said they couldn’t have gotten this far without their help. Phil took home $3070 and Scott received $3105 which included $35 in big fish pot money that came from his 5th place big bass that weighed 4.86 pounds. We would like to thank Phil and Scott for a fine weekend and wish them luck in the future as both have committed to fishing the New Super Team Trail for 2007, the Ultimate Western Challenge. See UWC at the www.100percentbass.com for more details.

Forth place went to the day 1 leader, Ron Diacon of Rio Linda with 30.86 pounds which included the big bass of the weekend, a real nice 6.93 pound lunker. Ron told us after the event, he used Senko’s all weekend just drifting them on deep ledges when the tide was just changing and there was very small current movement. Ron received $1485 and a nice plaque for his efforts.

Completing our top five James Yoo of San Leandro came in with 30.77 pounds and took home $905 for a fun weekend.

On the Am side of this event, James Day had one of the best weekends anyone could ask for. His 35.86 pound was the big bag of the weekend and not only allowed him to receive $700 but by fishing with the two anglers that tied for 2nd place on the pro side, James learned an incredible amount about fishing the Delta and being versatile. Second place Am was Dan Curtis who won $1660 while the third place check of $970 went to Tom Gordon. Rounding out the top five Am’s for the weekend were 4th place Guy Kelly and 5th place Ray Crane.
