4/14/07 – Thomas / Dagnino Have Legendary Performance at Delta

Every once in a while you get to witness a small part of history. While this was only a local team tournament, it was still a big part of a legends story. In the 1970’s Dee Thomas revolutionized Bass Fishing with his Flipping Technique. Now at age 70, he is still putting a hurt on local anglers as he added another notch to his belt. Just last week, he won another boat as winner of a local Pro/Am Tournament of Champions, and then today followed it up with a dominating performance under less than desirable conditions. We started the day at Russo’s Marina and at 6:30am sent 66 boats out into a cold spring storm that before days end would dump over 1 inch of rain and blow into the 20’s. Call it what you want, but for me, this was just another incredible performance by a true living legend, Dee Thomas.

As stated, this event was won by Dee Thomas of Brentwood and his partner George Dagnino of Martinez. Dee had a 5 fish limit that covered the scales at 28.50 Lbs and included the CYTOMAX big fish of the day, a lunker of a fish, weighing 9.46 lbs. With a victory by over 5 pounds, what was truly remarkable was the story at the awards, when he told of the TOAD over 10 pounds that George lost right at the boat. Imagine that, they would have won by over 10 pounds, culling out the small bass of the bag. Dee told everyone at the awards, they spent the whole day in the central delta, FLIPPIN Senkos in calm water. The key was to let to bait sit still for a long time so the fish would eventually pick it up and move off. He also wanted to thank Ranger, Mercury, Sawyer/Cook and both their wives for their support. I wonder who will get to spend the $4160 winners share. Either, way, they will have a pair of very nice trophies, sponsored by The Hook, Line and Sinker to remember a very special day for a very special angler. Congratulations to Dee and George, Keep up the hard work, you’re only as old as you feel.

Second place went to Walnut Creek Toyota’s number one Pro fishing team of Ernie Sanchez and John Brock. These two hale from Martinez and Pacheco and made their home towns very proud. They also brought in a 5 fish limit that topped out at 23.03 pounds and had a big fish as part of the 5. Their big fish was the second largest of the day and came in at 8.90 pounds. When asked about the day, Ernie said they caught all of their fish on ½ oz Black Rodstrainer Buzzbaits and ¾ oz Red/Craw Rattletraps. They focused primarily on areas of rocks and weeds in the middle river area. The reward this day for a fine day of fishing was $3235 and of course a pair of those nice plaques for THE HOOK.

Finishing in third were the current Anglers of the Year, Dan Fonte of Discovery Bay and Jim Stich of Bethel Island. These guys have been on a terror for over a year, and it looks like, the delta guys are still trying to figure out how to catch them. Their 5 fish came in at 23.02 and rewarded them with $3675. During the awards we asked Jim about the day and said one of them would throw a MS Slammer over weeds while the other would Flip a Boyce Jig or a Sweet Beaver into pockets along the edge. He also said they were in the same areas as the top two teams, the Central Delta. Dan and Jim took the time to thank sponsors, Baits by Boyce, Ohio Pro Lures WackyWorm and Russo’s Marina.

Forth place went to Pleasant Hill’s Mark Nelson and Don Skoglund. With a 5.93 pound kicker, their bag came in at 22.37 pounds and netted them $1315, while $895 was awarded to fifth place finishers Jonathan and David Koehler. Congratulations to all who fish and the many who still had fun days, catching big fish on the Delta.
