4/15/07 – D’orsay/Vann blow out field at New Melones

Sunday was not your typical day of fishing. Most everyone we talked to had high hopes early in the morning at Glory Hole Sports in Angels Camp, but when we got to the lake, that all changed. While the rains from Saturday were gone, the post frontal nightmare was just starting. WIND! That’s right, wind. It was blowing 15-20 MPH and by noon it was over 30. Needless to say, this would change everyone’s game plan. For some it was good, but for most, the sight fishing was gone, and it was adjustment time.

Making the best adjustment were Sonora’s Steve D’Orsay and Robert Vann. These guys started on the main lake throwing topwater and swimbaits but quick abandoned that game plan and move way up river to the protection of the high canyon walls. At this time, with the very Kool SPOOK byte gone, they converted to the old standby, shaking dart heads and pitching Senkos. The rest was about minor adjustments and relying on old knowledge of the lake. In the end, it all paid off, as the guys came in with a 5 fish limit of 18.01 pounds and a victory smile worth $6000. Like everyone else, they were beat up by the heavy wave all day, but it seamed to sting a little less than most. Congratulations to Steve and Robert on what we consider a courageous day.

Finishing in second place were long time teammates Jeff Frey of Riverbank and Jason Remmers of Valley Springs. The two did not have a kicker fish and still managed a very nice bag of 5, turning in at 16.96 pounds. Jeff told of a long day, changing up many times to figure out a good pattern. They used a Carolina Rigged Keeper Worm or a Homemade Jig in the shallows, but anytime they needed to go into the wind, they switched to DD22 Deep Diving Bill Norman Crankbaits. He also stated they ran to the South end of the lake and with the wind, decided to stay there all day and not get beat up. A very good decision as it brought them a pair of nice plaques and a check in the amount of $2580.

Third place went to the reigning Anglers of the Year from Angels Camp, Kyle Rasmussen and Jody Menzes. Coming off a win at another event on Saturday, these guys are always tuff and seam to make the good decisions during crunch time. Today was definitely a good decision, with 5 fish totaling 16.83 pounds that included the 4th big fish of the day, a 5.34 pound spotted bass. Carolina Rigged Brush Hogs and Split Shoting Robo Worms were the key to success. They also thanked glory Hole Sports for the support of their efforts as a major source for bring tournament to the Mother Lode. Along with a pair of nice trophies they took home $1695.

Forth place went to Father and Son LG and Tobey Guenthart with 16.41 pound and included a 6.56 Lb kicker. These favorites from Cathey’s Valley took home $1455. Rounding out the top five were another family team with Dad Troy Wells Sr. fishing with son Todd. They received $830 for a hard days work.

The Modesto Toyota big fish of the day award went to John Chiarpotti and Joe Bruce with their very nice Largemouth that topped out at 7.14 pounds.
