100% BASS Press Release 4/1/07 – Townsend / Nikell – Best of Field at Tuff bite on Shasta The Full moon was only days away and everyone talked about how the “Fish were Up” and big bags would be expected at today’s weigh in. For what every reason, the big bags just didn’t show. Fishing was pretty tuff for 31 teams that checked in at Phil’s Props before making the drive up the hill to Bridge Bay and the day’s events. With the resent Swimbait craze, we thought this would produce a lot of big SPOTS’s, but after the weigh in, we found that the old standby, plastic worms from Mothers Finest dominated the show. Finishing on top was local favorite and MinnKota Pro Staffer, Bill Townsend and Jim Nikell, both of Redding. These two managed one of only a few Swimbait fish, a Huddleston of course, and turned it into a kicker bass weighing in at 5.86 lbs. With a very nice spotted bass to anchor their 5 fish limit of 15.55 pounds we all realized that this seamed to be appropriate for this lake and this time of year. Townsend told everyone at the awards they threw the Swimbait for most of the day and then had to scramble to fill their limit after catching the winning Big Fish of the day. He stated the big fish came on the Swimbait in the Sacramento arm, but aYum Dinger and of course a #39 MF Worm made the difference when it came crunch time up in the McCloud river. Their reward for an excellent day on the water was a pair of trophies and check in the amount of $3510. Congratulations to Bill and Jim and thank you for taking the time to thank your sponsors, Ranger, Evinrude, Minnkota, Hunningbird, St Croix, MF Worms, Costa Del Mar, Maxima, Pradco, and Phil’s Props. Second place went to Up and coming young anglers Richard Dobyns of Yuba City and Shawn Anderson of Lake of the Pines. Richard and Shawn worked hard all day throwing Yamamoto grubs and Senkos while dragging a dart head. The pattern paid off, as with no kicker fish, they weighed in a solid 13.59 pounds and brought home a check for $1420. Richard told everyone at the awards, they fish all day on the main lake making many stops. “if they were there they would eat right away, otherwise we moved to the next spot. It just shows you how dedication to a pattern pays off. He also thanked Ranger, Evinrude, Yamamoto, and River2Sea. Having already won once this year, third place went to Mike Gray and Stuart Minugh of Redding. Their 5 fish limit tipped the scales at 12.60 pounds and brought them $980. Minugh said they fished points slowly all day long in the Sacramento Arm and on the main body, focusing primarily on points in 5 – 25 feet of water. The lure of choice was a 6” Mothers Finest Worm, in several Crawdad colors. He completed the day by thanking Phils Props and the rest of his sponsors for their support. Forth place went to Bryan McDermott and Chris Laskowski with 12.57 pounds. They received $665 while fifth place went to father and son Tom and Denny Goldston. Fifth place took home$390. 100% BASS would like to thank the fine sponsors that make the difference between fishing and the quality events we are able to provide as a result of their support.
