100% BASS   Press Release

01/12/08  - Church / Kidder Start Defense of Title with win at Berryessa

On Friday the weatherman said good weather for Saturday and the kick off the Wine Region for 2008. You know how weatherman are, mostly wrong, and this was no exception. We awoke to overcast and rain that lasted until about noon. Coincidently, that was when the bite ended, according to most of the anglers we talked to. Speaking of bites, most anglers reported catching fish from 5 – 30 feet using either crawdad colored worms or brown on brown jigs. Very few even mentioned any kind of reaction bite, including the usual swimbait bite that was non existent. It seemed that no matter which bait you chose, the real key was working the bait very slow. Also, main lake points near deep water were the key locating fish.

Finishing atop the field of 44 teams was Dave Church of Sonoma and John Kidder of Petaluma. These guys are the current Anglers of the Year and they showed why by bringing in a 5 fish limit that tipped the scales at 16.91 pounds. Their limit was anchored by the 4 big fish of the day, a very nice 4.45 pound largemouth bass. When asked about their winning pattern, Dave told everyone at the awards, the focused on 2 areas at the north end of the lake. They always had a brown jig in the water on one rod while the other used a crawdad worm. The depth fished depended on light penetration. They started shallow, went down to about 30 feet and then back shallow at the day ended. For their efforts they took home a pair of very nice trophies sponsored by Kosich and Callahan Insurance and a check in the amount of $3435. Congratulations to Dave and John for a great day and the only way to start the defense of your title.

Second place went to Robert Pisani of Winters and Todd Storm of Davis. A couple local nice guys, they always seem to find their way near the top. Today it was a 5 fish limit of 13.16 pounds that included the second big fish of the day, a 5.81 pound lunker. During an interview, Todd also stated they spent the day up north focusing on main lake points. The lure of choice for these guys was plastic worms in an oxblood color and a 6” model. It sure paid off as the also received a pair of those nice plaques and spending money in the amount of $2085.

The third place finishers were former anglers of the year Marc Brown of Ukiah and Jared Stone of Lakeport. They also had a nice kicker bass, a 4.76 pound largemouth that anchored their limit of 12.56 pounds. Marc said they were on the same Jig and worm pattern as everyone else, they were just lucky enough to get one of the better bites, yea right, remember, they were AOY’s a years ago. Their efforts paid off with a check in the amount of $190.

Forth place went to Ron Tobey of Concord and James Kimura of Vallejo. These guys had the Big Dog Baits, Big fish of the day, a 6.20 pound Hawg Largemouth that topped off their limit of 12.10 pounds.  In total with big fish money they took home $870. Rounding out the top 5 were Justin Nelson and Jeff Garmeson. They weighed in at 11.75 and received $570 for their effort.

Our next tournament is Saturday, February 2 at Clear Lake. Check in will be at the “TACKLE  IT” tackle store, next to the Anchorage Motel in Lakeport.
