100% BASS Press Release 02/02/08 - Hage / Seals Surprise Field With Big Bag Clear Lake Saturday was a different type of day for tournament fishing. First, the weather for the past weeks had been miserable, second, water temperatures were at 10 year lows (low 40’s), and last but not least, fishing for most had been horrible, at least according to pre tournament talk during check in at “TACKLE IT” tackle store in Lakeport . It had been so bad, that last week another trail held an event and 2 fish won that tournament. Well, obviously something changed, although we are not sure what. It was still cold and the weatherman didn’t let up, it rained all day, non stop all the way through weigh in. 24 teams showed up to brave the conditions and tuff bite, and while most were severely tested, a few bright spots showed us that spring is just around the corner. It seamed the one constant was, SLOW. This is how everyone described their presentation. One angler said, “If I moved my Jig any slower, I was going to fall asleep from the lack of movement”. Jigs were definitely the lure of success, as all the top teams reported using heavy jigs in a variety of colors, mostly in a black or brown base. Finishing ahead of the field was Darron Hage of Clovedale and Steven Seals of Windsor. These two had a spring like day weighing in a 5 fish limit of 28.30 pounds that included the “PERSUADER BASS BAITS” big fish of the day, a very nice 8.51 pound lunker. The rain didn’t bother these guys; in fact they said it was part of their success. The overcast helped the fish they found the week before in practice to stay bunched up in one little area. It must have been a pretty good area, as they apparently had to share it with the second place team, who also found the same fish. Seals told us they were having a fairly good day, with 9 keepers to their credit and about 2 pm, the nearly 9 pound fish ate a home made Black/Brown Jig and the tournament was theirs. He also mentioned the real key was fishing SLOW in about 15 – 30 feet of water. (Hint – there is no water at the north end of the lake that reaches 30 feet deep). Steven also took the time to thank his sponsors, Charles M. Schulz Museum, Santa Rosa F and M Steel Inc. Marine Max, Santa Rosa Pool Service and their wives, Janet and Pam. As a reward for their hard work these guys received a pair of nice plaques (sponsored by Kosich and Callahan Insurance) to remember the day by and a check in the amount of $2340. Congratulations to Darron and Steven for kicking off 2008 for the entire bass fishing world in a great way. Second place went to two really good guys and two really good fishermen, Randy Marshall of Folsom and Kevin Davis of Elverta. They had the 2nd biggest fish of the day in their bag of 25.08 pounds, a 6.73 pound anchor. They also told of the fish they found and how it was an interesting experience having to share your start spot with someone else. Especially knowing how good the fish in the area were.Kevin said they also were using Jigs, however they had found Black/Purple to be a better color for them. What ever your color choice, It is obvious you need to be throwing jigs right now at Clear Lake. They also received a pair of nice plaques to go with a check in the amount of $1330. Good job Kevin and Randy. Third place went to the current Anglers of the Year, Dave Church of Sonoma and John Kidder of Petaluma. Their 5 fish came in at 18.62 pounds and included a fairly nice 4.91 pound kicker. Church said at the awards they completed the tri-fecta of success as they also caught all their fish on Brown Jigs. Another consistent performance by these guys, keeping them atop the leader board, in the chase for this year’s title. It also netted them $775 to go with a pair of those nice plaques. Finishing in forth was a very good accomplishment for Jerry Tilton and Wayne Breazeale of Kelseyville, even though they struggled on their home water and only came in with 4 fish. Not a bad set of fish though considering they weighed 17.35 pounds and brought them $400. They also keep them only 6 points out first place in the angler of the year race which will make these guys tuff to compete against with 2 of the last 3 events on Clear Lake. Fifth place went to the only other limit of the day, Dave Symmons of Pinole and Alan Butt of Crockett. They came in at 17.26 pounds and took home $270. 100% BASS would like to thank the fine sponsors that make the difference between fishing and the quality events we are able to provide as a result of their support.
