100% BASS Press Release 02/09/08 - Potter / Farmer Notch First Ever Win at Delta Regions Kick Off After weeks of wind, rain, and overcast skies we finally found a break in the action. 4 strait days of sunshine and everyone was anticipating better fishing. Well they were partly right. Of the 39 teams that checked in at Russo’s Marina, only 5 weighed in with a 5 fish limits, however, those that did find them, found them good. While fishing overall was still tuff, one thing became very clear at weigh in, Black and Blue Jigs was the weapon that made the difference. All of the top 5 teams reported using them, and nearly all of the 8 fish over 5 pounds that were weighed, came on a jig. They best areas to fish seamed to be where dead end waters came together with main rivers. “Just off to the side, and you were in the magic zone”, said one angler. Taking top honors on this day were long time team partners, but first time winners, Brent Potter and Mike Farmer of Rodeo. It really surprised me when Mike told me this was there first win, They have received many a top 5 check from 100% BASS in years past. Today the came to the scales with 5 fish totaling 27.33 pounds that included their anchor of 7.14 pounds that held up for 5th in the big bass pot. When asked about the winning pattern, they said they used Black / Blue ½ ounce Jigs Flippin tulles. He also mentioned they burned very little gas which means they didn’t run very far from Russo’s and focused on keeping the Jig in the water and working it very slow. It definitely paid off as they received a pair of nice plaques sponsored by The Hook, Line and & Sinker in Oakley, and a check in the amount of $3,295. Congratulations to Brent and Mike for a great day of fishing and for selecting 100% BASS as the trail you broke the ice with. Finishing in Second place was Legendary Hall of Famer Dee Thomas of Brentwood and long time partner George Dagnino of Martinez. If you ever doubted anyone’s will to compete or ones ability to compete as we get older, check this out, “Dee is still taking our money at 71 years young” said one of his competitors. When asked about his 23.63 pounds, that didn’t have a 5 pounder in the bag, he simply smiled and said “JIGS”. During weigh in George did let loose with a little secret, they caught a couple of the fish on Senkos. As usual Dee is pretty tight lipped about where he was fishing, but you cant fish tournament for 40 years and expect your secret spots to remain secrets, the key was know when to be there, not where to go, and Dee has it figured out as good as anyone. For figuring it out this day he and George received $1860 and a pair of those nice plaques for The Hook. Third place went to Brentwood’s Bob Garrigan and Dublin’s Darren Phelps with a 5 fish limit that tipped the scales at 22.45 pounds. They also had a nice lunker in the bag, as their big fish weighed in at 7.27 pounds. Garrigan told everyone at the awards that Pitchin a Black and Blue Revenge Jig was their lure of choice, but that they focused on fish a little deeper, as they fished the central delta in about 5 feet of water. They took home a pair of nice trophies and a pocket change in the amount of $1185. Forth place went to Livermore’s Tony Peterson and Brentwood’s James Rios. They had the second biggest bass of the day, a 9.43 pound Hawg that helped with their 20.87 pound catch. While they probably couldn’t have caught the winners, Tony said, if we could only have caught their 5th fish, they might have challenged the other top teams. They still took home a very respectable $840. Rounding out the top 5 were Robert Jones of Clayton and Ralph Saul of Concord. They only had 3 fish that weighed 19.75 pounds, but their bag included the PERSUADER Big Bass of the day, a Toad weighing 11.45 Pounds. Between the big bass pot and 5th place they took home $740. 100% BASS would like to thank the fine sponsors that make the difference between fishing and the quality events we are able to provide as a result of their support.
