100% BASS Press Release 02/10/08 - Cook / Souza Win at New Melones to Start the Season in the Mother Lode Sunshine and Blue skies in the foothills for nearly a week had everyone buzzing at check in. 51 teams showed up Glory Hole Sports in Angels Camp for the biggest event of the season and all anyone could talk about was, will the swimbait bite kick in. Well they were a little disappointed as all the top teams proved that good old bottom fishing with worms and jigs turned out to be the winning secret. While half the field managed a 5 fish limit, only 8 teams managed a 2 pound or better average which would allow them to take home some spending money. While many talked about the worm bite, Jigs definitely made the difference between good bites and very good bites. Topping the field were Ryan Cook of Atwater and Eric Souza of Winton. These guys took all day to figure it out, but about 2 pm, they ran up river and caught two 4 pound Spotted Bass and squeaked out the victory. Their big fish was 4.76 pounds and with a clone and 3 other fish they weighed a total of 13.15 pounds. Cook told everyone at the awards that Brown Berserk Jigs in ½ ounce made the difference. They ran up river to the step wall and pitched heavy jigs the fish would hammer it on the fall, “you just needed to be ready”, said Cook as bites were few and far between. They did the right bites thou, and were rewarded with a pair of nice trophies and cash in the amount of $4,570. Congratulations to Ryan and Eric and Thanks to giving us a very good start to this season. It’s always nice when you get to fish with your grandson. It’s even better when he fishes tournaments with you. Second place went to Granddad Ernie Evans and Grandson John, both of Modesto. They had a solid bag of fish with no kicker, and still weighed in at 12.51 pounds, barely over ½ a pound from winning. When asked, Evans told us they spent all day on one bank near Rose Island, going back and forth. The method they choose was Carolina Rigging a Pumpkinseed Brush Hog in about 20 feet of water. It paid off very well as they caught about 15 fish, Evans said and brought them $1100. Thanks for brining John out to fish with us. Third place went to Chowchilla’s Larry Adams and Jonathan Myers. These two had the 2nd biggest bass of the day in the bag, a real nice 6.20 pound Largemouth. While only a little over a pound from the lead, Adams was very disappointed when we called his weight of 11.97 pounds. The reason, they only managed 4 fish this day and a 5 fish limit probably would have made them the winners. Adams said they fished heavy jigs in 50-70 feet of water on the main lake and just couldn’t get any more bites. All in all, still not a bad day on the water, as they took home $2480. Forth place went to a pair of guys who just teamed up, Matt Hudson and Brandon Morris of Manteca. Their 11.94 pounds was anchored by the Big Bass of the day, a nice lunker weighing 6.24 pounds. The big fish and forth place netted them $1755. Finishing in fifth was another set of relatives, Father and Son, Troy Wells Sr. and Todd. These two have fished together for years and are always tuff to beat. They weighed in 5 fish for 10.70 and a check for $945. 100% BASS would like to thank the fine sponsors that make the difference between fishing and the quality events we are able to provide as a result of their support.
