100% BASS   Press Release

03/16/08 – Woodson Brothers Take First Place at WRL Opener on Berryessa

At the start of the blast off for the first tournament of the year it looked like Mother Nature was going to be on our side.  The wind was not a factor until about an hour into the game but as the day progressed, the gusts became stronger and stronger. The weather started getting rough, the tiny bass boats were tossed; if not for the courage of the fearless anglers the tournament would have been lost!  Heading north seemed to be the key.  The question, do I make that run first thing or the weather looks great so I will make it later.  The teams that decided to make that run first thing proved to be the right choice. While some called it a day and left before the weigh-in, others outlasted the wind and made the best of it.  Mother Nature is so unpredictable in the early spring.  With rain Saturday afternoon prior to this tournament then the wind to contend with on the opener, patterns and baits had changed for many of the anglers who had pre-fished for this event.

When I see something like this, it makes me feel that this is what it is all about.  It’s the NFL concept, any given Sunday a team can win and that is what we had on this given day.

In the Large boat Division, the team of Lee R. Woodson and Ryan J. Woodson both from Chico, brothers, Ryan’s first tournament.  Nice way to start off -  First Place with a weight of 14.12 lbs. and their kicker of 4.35 lbs. added to their bag.  The Woodson team came in early as the older brother decided the wind was relentless so for his younger brother’s first tournament, they had had enough.  Hats off to the Woodson parents as I watched them congratulate their sons and take photos, like they had just won the Bass Master Classis!  Great family support!  Lee and Ryan took home winnings of $2770.00 for a rough day on the water.  They told everyone they fished the north end of the lake; shallow cranking with speed traps in craw, deep red and orange colors.  Congratulations to the Woodson team!

A great start for this team of Ron Frye from Dixon and Frank Hollar from Rio Linda who has been with WRL for many years, had a limit that weighed in at 11.47 lbs. and their large bass that accompanied the other four bass weighing 4.07 lbs. giving them Second Place in this event. They told the crowd that they caught their bass on jigs near the big islands of the lake fishing slow.  They took home winning of $885 for a day on the water.

Third Place went to two members of our staff, who help run each WRL event to make it go smoothly; weighing in early at each event, you have to give kudos for their efforts.  Rich Reeser of Dixon and Kevin Ryan of Oakdale came to the scales with a limit of bass weighing in at 11.22 lbs.  Their largest bass weighed 3.44 lbs.  They told everyone they caught their limit in the north end of the main body of the lake fishing shallow using Basstrix and jigs.  Their winnings totaled $1175.00 for a tough day at Berryessa.

Forth Place was the team of Clint Burrows of Sacramento and Lawrence Kereszt of Fair Oaks who brought a bag of bass to the scales weighing in at 11.11 lbs. with a Large Mouth that added 3.80 lbs. to their weight to give them winnings of $790.00.  Lawrence and his partner Clint usually don’t enter into the options but Lawrence’s wife told him to put the money in so he did and now he owes her!

The team of Brandon Gee of Yuba City and Duke Kanaya of  Winters had four bass to weigh-in.  They caught the winning Big Fish of the tournament which weighed 4.81 lbs. giving them fifth place over-all.  The total weight of their bass was 10.60 lbs. which gave them a paycheck of $1205.00 for a hard day of work on the lake.

In the Small Boat Division, the anglers were at a great disadvantage because of he wind so congratulations to everyone who caught fish!  The team of Jeff Hardin from Chico and Paul Eusey from Elk Grove weighed in 3 bass totaling 4.96 lbs. however they had a large Spotted Bass that weighed 3.85 lbs. and gave them Fifth Place Big Fish with winnings of $70.00.  They left after weighing in their bass so where they fished and what they used to catch their bass is a mystery to everyone!  They will get their trophies and winnings at Lake Oroville, our next stop for the Western Rookie League!

Just out of the money, in 19th place was the team of Richey Paul of Yuba City and Jose Paez from Provo, Utah who received Bass Angler’s Guide Magazines, both December and March issues from our sponsor “Bass Angler’s Guide”.  You can find copies of these magazines at your local tackle stores or you can order on line at www.bassanglersguide.com.  They will also be on sale at every WRL event.

For the “20-20 Award” - Twentieth place “Eye Surrender” donated two pair of sunglasses.  They were given to the team of Dan Sweat of Concord and Jeff Asturias from Castro Valley by Wes Stevener, the owner of Eye Surrender.  If you would like to order a pair, please contact Wes at www.eyesurrenderonline.com

I would like to thank my staff for making this event professional, quick, and above all fun.  To all the anglers that participated, thank you for your support.
